An interesting feature of the present wave of
redevelopment is the tendency for comparatively new buildings to succumb
to demolition. St John's College buildings, subsequently part of
MANCAT, were similar to many from the 1950s and 60s. Not as ancient as
Chethams or as grand as the university, the building nevertheless
figured prominently in many peoples' education, including mine: I took
an evening class in A Level German here between 1974 and 1976. A new
MANCAT campus has been built in Openshaw, but the college retains a
presence here in a new building on Quay St.
