THIS IS STATION ROAD URMSTON looking towards the railway station. The buildings are mainly late 19th century, though the shop fronts are contemporary.

A branch of HSBC, formerly the Midland Bank is on the left. The newsagents on the corner of Royal Avenue, centre left, has its metal shutters drawn down.

The retail property on the right is currently up for sale.

A NUMBER 22 BUS operated by First Manchester passes along Station Road Urmston on its way from Bolton to Stockport.

This particular bus dates from around 1984 and would originally have been painted in the orange and brown colours of Greater Manchester Transport, which became GM Buses on privatisation in 1986.

Still in service it is now in the flame red livery of private operator First Manchester, which provides bus services mainly in and around the north of Manchester.

This bus will soon be reaching the end of its service life.

WE ARE IN URMSTON TOWN CENTRE standing on the corner of Station Road, Flixton Road, Crofts Bank Road and Railway Road - the street signs are reproduced at the top of this panoramic composite photograph.

The corner building is in a plain but attractive late 19th century style. The corner shop unit is currently a Pounds Store. Other retail names visible here include Lloyds Pharmacy, the Natwest Bank, Greggs bakers, a branch of the Abbey National and further along Flixton Road, a Poundstretcher store.

It's a sunny lunchtime day and there are plenty of people about.

We are standing on a railway bridge - directly underneath is the Manchester Flixton Warrington railway line.

URMSTON RAILWAY STATION is seen here looking down from Station Road bridge.

We are looking west. The old station building is on the left, its windows now boarded up.

On the right hand side is a new station building with ramp access for the disabled, from street to platform level.

A train on its way to Manchester Airport has just stopped and is picking up passengers.

Today we have a blue sky with scattered white clouds - the long straight tracks disappear into the distance. Further along the line are Flixton , Irlam and Warrington.

I'll be revisiting this area again in the near future and will provide more pictures and accopanying articles. Please contact if there are any locations you'd like me to feature.
