OUT AND ABOUT IN MANCHESTER DURING THE GAMES - A day by day photogallery with weather summary.
This feature presents photos taken out and about in Manchester during the 11 days of the Commonwealth Games. My main focus is not the games themselves, nor the athletes, volunteers or spectators. The M2002 people have been well covered by other media. Instead I've concentrated on my usual subject: the city, with images of the streets, the buildings, the familiar places, the gardens, the roads, the landmarks and of course the weather!

Thursday 25 July 2002: Day One - Overcast with cotton wool clouds over Manchester - warm, and no rain
CROWDS IN EXCHANGE SQUARE watch the opening ceremony on the big screen. On the left is the Corn Exchange, now Triangle, on the right the Arndale Centre, still to be renovated. In the middle can be seen the Printworks and behind it, the CIS Building.
EWM says: An enjoyable event, though with not quite as many people as I'd expected.
CROWDS WATCH THE BIG SCREEN in Exchange Square against the backdrop of the Arndale Centre
EWM says: The design of the new square, like an amphitheatre, has proved a big success for outdoor events
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND POLICE OFFICERS watch the opening ceremony in front of the 1905 Corn Exchange, now The Triangle shopping centre.
EWM says: It was a happy and good natured event - the police weren't kept busy!
